Steward Stories: What it Means to be a Steward

September 14, 2026

As a lifelong Nevada resident, I cherish having backyard access to the wide-open expanse of uninhabited land this wonderful state offers. I had wanted to be a site steward for a number of years to help protect Nevada’s archeologically sensitive sites, but work and other life activities got in the way. Having retired for 2+ years  it has given me the opportunity to spend as much time as I want doing the things I truly enjoy. Becoming a site steward was one of those activities. I have now been a steward for 2+ years and as such I now steward a number of sites in both Clark and Lincoln Counties.  Equally important, it has given me the opportunity to meet and work with some wonderful people. From NSSP staff to student interns and other NSSP site stewards. People I can now call friends. The site stewardship program has also afforded me the opportunity to work with these colleagues on two NSSP special site surveys. One this past spring in Valley of Fire State Park and the other at the Ward Charcoal Ovens State Park in White Pine County. I look forward to a long relationship with the NSSP.
