Magnitude 5.7 Quake Rattles Northern Nevada

(MENAFN) A magnitude 5.7 earthquake rattled northern Nevada on Monday evening, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported, triggering an automated early-warning alert and prompting immediate emergency coordination across the affected region.

The tremor struck at approximately 6:29 p.m. local time — 0129 GMT Tuesday — roughly 20 kilometers southeast of Silver Springs in Lyon County, setting off a ShakeAlert notification that reached residents across a broad swath of northern Nevada and extended into neighboring parts of California.

Despite the quake's strength, Lyon County authorities confirmed in a statement published on the county's official website that no significant damage or injuries had been reported in the immediate aftermath.

"Lyon County Emergency Management immediately activated coordination efforts with local public safety agencies, utilities, school districts, and healthcare facilities. At this time, no major damage has been reported to critical infrastructure, including hospitals, schools, transportation systems, or utility services," the statement read.

As a precautionary measure, response teams are set to conduct thorough damage assessments across the county over the coming days to rule out any delayed or hidden structural impacts.

The USGS recorded a series of aftershocks in the quake's wake, ranging in magnitude from 2.5 to 3.6. The Nevada Office of Emergency Management moved to reassure the public, noting that earthquakes frequently occur in sequences and that follow-on tremors are "normal and expected."

The agency also issued direct safety guidance for residents still on edge. "If you feel the ground shake again, do not run outside," it advised — urging calm over panic as monitoring of the region continues.
